Trex’s SunComfortable line and similar heat-mitigating composite technology from other major brands are engineered specifically to run cooler than standard boards of a similar shade. Cedar and pressure-treated wood generally stay cooler underfoot than a dark composite board in full sun, though nothing stays cool without help in a Schertz July. The most effective fix isn’t material alone — it’s material plus shade. Pairing a lighter-colored deck with a patio cover or pergola over the highest-traffic section is what actually keeps a Schertz deck usable from May through September.
