The right outdoor deck lights extend your evening by hours — and the wrong ones look cheap, fail within a season, or create dark spots that make your deck unsafe after sunset. Paradise Decks & Spas designs and installs complete deck lighting systems built for San Antonio’s heat, humidity, and outdoor lifestyle.

San Antonio evenings are some of the best outdoor living hours you have — cooler temperatures, softer light, and no reason to go inside. But most homeowners either have no deck lighting at all, or a single overhead fixture that creates one bright spot and leaves everything else in shadow.
Professional deck lighting design is about layering — ambient light for the overall space, task lighting for stairs and cooking areas, accent lighting for railings and architectural features, and the kind of warm glow that makes a backyard feel like an extension of your home rather than just a platform attached to it.
As San Antonio’s full-service deck builder and lighting installer, Paradise Decks & Spas handles deck lighting as part of new builds and as standalone retrofits on existing decks. Our in-house team designs and installs everything — no third-party electricians to coordinate, no gaps in accountability when something needs adjusting.
These are the situations that send San Antonio homeowners looking for deck lighting solutions:
Every deck lighting system we build is layered — at least two or three fixture types working together to create a space that feels complete, not spotty. Here’s what we work with:
Deck post lights — also called post cap lights — sit on top of railing posts and define the perimeter of your deck with a warm, consistent glow. They’re the most visible deck lighting element from inside the home and from the yard, and they set the tone for everything else. Lights for decking posts are available in low-voltage LED, solar-powered, and line-voltage versions. We match the post cap style to your railing profile and the light output to your deck’s size so coverage is even, not patchy.
Deck stair lighting is the most safety-critical element of any outdoor lighting plan. Dark stairs are a fall risk — especially for guests who aren’t familiar with your deck’s layout. Deck step lights are typically recessed into the riser face or mounted to the stringer, casting light down across the tread without creating glare. We position deck stair lighting so every tread is illuminated, not just the top and bottom steps. For longer stair runs, we calculate fixture spacing to ensure consistent coverage across the full run.
Low voltage deck lighting — running on 12V transformer systems — is the most popular choice for residential deck lighting in San Antonio for good reason. It’s safe to install and work around, dramatically cheaper to operate than line-voltage systems, compatible with smart controllers and dimmers, and available in a wide range of fixture styles. We size the transformer to the total fixture load, plan the wire runs during design rather than after installation, and install the transformer in a weatherproof location with a programmable timer built in.
Solar deck lights are the right choice for areas where running wire is impractical — a freestanding pergola away from the home, a garden path leading to the deck, or post cap lights on a detached structure. Modern solar deck lights have improved significantly — today’s quality solar post cap lights hold a charge through multi-day overcast periods and produce meaningful light output, not just a faint glow. We specify solar deck lights for applications where they genuinely perform and steer clients toward low-voltage wired systems where consistent output matters more.
Under-rail strip lighting runs along the underside of the top rail cap, casting a soft wash of light down across the deck surface and outward into the yard. It creates the ambient “floor glow” effect that makes a deck look finished in photos and in person. Recessed deck board lights are installed between deck boards, shining upward — a dramatic look best used as an accent alongside other fixture types. Both work well with RGB color-changing LED strips for homeowners who want the option to adjust color temperature or run accent colors for entertaining.
Smart deck lighting systems — compatible with platforms like Govee, Lutron Caseta, or standard Z-Wave smart home hubs — allow you to control every lighting zone from your phone, set automated schedules, dim individual circuits, and create scene presets (entertaining, ambient, security). Govee deck lights specifically have become popular for their color control and app-based management; we integrate them into broader lighting plans alongside traditional low-voltage fixtures. If you want one-tap control of your entire outdoor lighting system, we design that from the start rather than trying to retrofit smart capability onto a system that wasn’t built for it.
Not sure what lighting approach is right for your deck? Here are the ideas for decking lights our clients request most often:
Step 1 — Free Lighting Consultation We visit your deck (existing or planned), walk the space at your direction, and ask about how you use it in the evening — entertaining, family time, ambiance, safety, or all of the above. We identify the dark spots, the safety gaps, and the opportunities.
Step 2 — Lighting Design & Fixture Selection We produce a lighting plan showing fixture placement, circuit layout, transformer location, and wire routing. You see fixture samples and review the plan before we order anything.
Step 3 — Written Quote You receive a fixed-price written quote covering fixtures, wiring, transformer, controls, and installation labor. No surprises.
Step 4 — Installation For new decks, we install conduit and wire runs before decking boards go down — the cleanest possible result. For existing decks, we route wiring with minimal disruption and patch cleanly. All fixtures are weatherproofed and connections are made in waterproof junction boxes.
Step 5 — Programming & Walkthrough We program timers, set up smart controls or app connections where applicable, and walk you through operating your system. We don’t leave until every fixture is working and you know how to control it.
We design and install outdoor deck lighting systems throughout the greater San Antonio metro and surrounding communities.

Low-voltage LED deck lighting is the best overall choice for San Antonio. LED fixtures run cool — important in a climate where ambient temperatures already push 100°F in summer — consume a fraction of the energy of halogen or incandescent fixtures, and last years without bulb replacement. Fixtures should be rated IP65 or higher for outdoor use, meaning they’re fully sealed against dust and water jets. We only specify fixtures rated for outdoor exposure in South Texas conditions.
Quality solar deck lights from reputable brands work well for post cap applications and low-output accent lighting — especially in San Antonio where we average 220+ sunny days per year. For stair lighting, under-rail strips, or any fixture where consistent output matters (safety lighting, entertaining), we recommend low voltage wired systems. Solar is best suited as a supplement, not a primary lighting source.
Low voltage deck lighting runs on 12V DC power supplied by a transformer that plugs into a standard outdoor outlet. The transformer steps down household current to safe, low-voltage power that runs through landscape wire to each fixture. Benefits include safety (12V won’t cause electrocution if a wire is accidentally cut), low operating cost, dimmer and timer compatibility, and a wide selection of fixture styles. We size the transformer to total fixture wattage and plan wire runs so voltage drop doesn’t reduce brightness at fixtures farthest from the transformer.
One post cap light per railing post is standard. For decks with widely spaced posts — cable railing systems, for example — supplemental under-rail lighting fills the gaps. We calculate your deck’s perimeter and post count during the consultation and recommend the right fixture quantity for even coverage.
Yes. We retrofit deck lighting onto existing decks regularly — regardless of who built the deck originally. For surface-mounted fixtures, we route low voltage wire along joists and through pre-drilled holes with minimal disruption. We patch any penetrations cleanly and weatherproof all connections. The result looks like it was planned from the start.
Govee deck lights are a popular consumer smart lighting brand known for color-changing LED strips and app-based control. They work well as accent lighting — under-rail strips, between-board lighting, and pergola accents — and the Govee app gives solid scene and color control. We integrate Govee products into broader lighting plans where the color flexibility and smart control are a good fit, paired with traditional low-voltage fixtures for post caps and stair lighting where consistent output matters more than color-changing capability.
Low voltage deck lighting (12V transformer systems) generally does not require a permit in San Antonio. Line-voltage work — adding a new outdoor circuit, installing a subpanel for a large lighting system, or any 120V outdoor wiring — does require a licensed electrician and typically a permit. We handle the design and low-voltage installation in-house and coordinate licensed electrical work for line-voltage requirements when needed.
A basic low voltage system with post cap lights and stair lighting on a standard 300–400 sq ft deck typically runs $1,800–$3,500 installed. A full system with post caps, step lights, under-rail strips, smart transformer, and app control runs $3,500–$6,500 depending on fixture selection and deck size. We provide a fixed written quote before any work begins.
Whether you want simple deck stair lighting for safety, a full low voltage deck lighting system with smart control, or solar deck lights for a detached structure — Paradise Decks & Spas will design it, install it, and make sure it works exactly the way you want it to.
