Drainage is structural, not cosmetic. A pool deck that doesn’t drain properly backs water onto the surface, accelerates cracking, and creates slip hazards. Drainage slope — a minimum 1/8 inch per foot away from the pool edge and toward perimeter drains — must be built into the subgrade and concrete form before pouring. It cannot be corrected afterward.
Material selection matters at the water’s edge. Wood decking adjacent to a pool deteriorates rapidly in the constant wet-dry cycle pool environments create. PVC decking (AZEK) is the correct material for pool-adjacent surfaces — no wood fiber to absorb moisture, and a 50-year warranty that reflects genuine performance in wet environments. Composite with a high-quality polymer cap (Trex Transcend, TimberTech PRO) is also appropriate; untreated or minimally capped composite is not.
Slip resistance is a safety requirement. Pool deck surfaces — whether concrete or composite — must have sufficient texture for wet bare feet. We never install smooth-finish concrete on pool decks or smooth-release stamp profiles on stamped concrete pool surfaces. Slip-resistant texture is built into the finish specification on every pool deck we install.
Integration with the overall outdoor environment. The best New Braunfels pool decks are designed as part of the complete outdoor living environment — connected to the covered patio or pergola, flowing into the stamped concrete or composite deck areas, and accommodating the outdoor kitchen and seating zones that the pool area anchors. Yes. The City of New Braunfels requires building permits for deck construction, patio cover installation, and most outdoor structure projects within city limits. Comal County handles permits for unincorporated properties outside city limits. We verify the correct jurisdiction for your specific address and handle the complete permit and inspection process.
Yes. Vintage Oaks at the Vineyard has one of the more active architectural review processes in the New Braunfels area — material specifications, structural heights, color documentation, and setback compliance are all reviewed before approval. We prepare complete HOA submittal packages for Vintage Oaks and other New Braunfels master-planned communities as part of every applicable project. Most Vintage Oaks HOA reviews take 3–4 weeks; we factor this into your project timeline.
For pool-adjacent surfaces, AZEK full PVC is the more appropriate choice over standard capped composite — its zero wood-fiber construction handles constant moisture exposure better than composite over the long term. For the primary deck area away from the pool, Trex Transcend or TimberTech PRO composite is excellent — the capped polymer shell resists the moisture cycling that New Braunfels’ climate produces better than wood. We specify material by zone — pool edge, transition, primary deck — rather than using one material across the full project.
Design and 3D rendering: 3–7 days after the site visit. City of New Braunfels permit and HOA approval: 2–5 weeks combined when submitted simultaneously.
