Which Trex Line Is Right for a San Antonio Deck?

Trex isn’t one product. It’s five collections across four tiers, and in a climate like ours the differences between them are not cosmetic.

LineWarrantyWhat it’s forSan Antonio verdict
Signature50-yearLuxury tier, most realistic wood grain, most scratch-resistant board Trex makesBest for high-traffic entertaining decks, large dogs, heavy furniture
Transcend Lineage50-yearSunComfortable heat-mitigating shell, linear grain, muted colorsOur default for west and south-facing decks and pool surrounds
Transcend50-yearFlagship. Three-sided shell, deepest wood grain, broadest color rangeExcellent on shaded or north-facing decks where heat isn’t the issue
Select35-yearTwo-sided shell, thinner profile, strong valueGood mid-budget choice for ground-level decks
Enhance25-yearEntry tier, scalloped underside for lighter weight and better drainageThe honest step up from pressure-treated pine

One installation detail worth knowing before you mix lines: Select boards are thinner than Signature, Transcend, and Enhance. Trex specifically advises against combining them, because the height difference creates a trip hazard. If someone quotes you a Transcend main deck with Select on the stairs to save money, that’s a spec problem, not a bargain.

Those numbers include the substructure, fasteners, and a basic railing. What moves them: deck height over 30 inches, stair runs, railing upgrade, and site conditions — heavy clay lots needing deeper or helical piers typically add $500 to $1,500. The framing, footing, and flashing work underneath is covered on our deck construction page.

A common way to spend less without losing anything: pressure-treated framing under a Trex surface. Nobody sees the joists.

Is Trex Decking Worth the Cost in South Texas?

Here’s the honest version, because the usual answer on contractor sites is “absolutely” and that’s not quite true.

Over ten years, Trex roughly breaks even with cedar. A composite deck costs meaningfully more up front. Cedar and pressure-treated pine need cleaning and re-sealing every two to three years in our UV load, and those cycles add up — but not quite enough to close a $5,000 gap inside a decade.

Over twenty to twenty-five years, Trex wins clearly. That’s where the 25 to 50-year warranties and the absence of a staining cycle actually compound, and it’s also past the point where a pressure-treated deck in San Antonio has usually needed board replacement.

So the real question isn’t the math — it’s how long you’re staying. If you’re selling in five years, cedar is defensible. If this is the house you’re in for the long run, or you simply never want to spend a weekend sanding and sealing again, Trex is the better buy. We’d rather tell you that than sell you a tier you don’t need.

If you go the wood route instead, deck staining is a service we offer, so this isn’t us talking ourselves out of work.

How Trex Handles San Antonio Summer Sun

This is where line selection stops being about looks.

Every composite board gets hot in direct sun — Trex included, and any installer who tells you otherwise hasn’t stood on one in August. What varies is how hot, and Trex built a product specifically for this.

Transcend Lineage uses SunComfortable technology, a heat-mitigating shell that Trex reports testing at up to 35 degrees cooler than its original boards under lab conditions. Lab conditions aren’t your backyard in July, so treat that as a ceiling rather than a promise — but the difference underfoot is real, and it’s the reason Lineage is what we specify most often on west-facing decks, pool surrounds, and anywhere kids will be barefoot.

Two things that matter as much as the line you pick:

Color. A dark board in Spice Rum runs hotter than a light one in Island Mist or Salt Flat, full stop. On a full-sun deck, color choice moves surface temperature more than most homeowners expect.

Shade. The cheapest heat mitigation on the market is a pergola. We plan patio covers and shade structures alongside the deck rather than bolting them on later.

Trex boards also won’t splinter, and they hold color against our UV rather than graying out the way untreated wood does within a season or two.

What the Trex Warranty Covers — And How Installation Affects It

Every Trex line carries a limited residential warranty covering fading, staining, and material defects: 25 years on Enhance, 35 on Select, and 50 on Transcend, Transcend Lineage, and Signature.

The part that gets glossed over: that warranty assumes the deck was installed according to Trex’s published instructions. Joist spacing, gapping, fastener type, and ventilation under the boards are all specified by the manufacturer, and an install that ignores them can give Trex grounds to decline a claim years later. This is the actual reason your installer matters on a composite deck — not the brand loyalty pitch.

Two Texas-specific install points:

Expansion gapping is set to install temperature. Composite moves with heat more than wood does. Boards laid on a 50°F February morning need different end gaps than the same boards laid in 100°F July. Gapped wrong in winter, a deck buckles by summer.

Grooved boards and hidden fasteners. We use Trex’s hidden fastener system on grooved profiles, which keeps the surface free of visible screw heads and leaves the manufacturer’s specified gap without guesswork.

Alongside the Trex material warranty, our own workmanship warranty covers the installation itself. Ask for both in writing — from us or from anyone else you’re considering.

Where We Install Trex Across San Antonio and the Hill Country

Bexar County and inner metro: San Antonio · Stone Oak · Alamo Heights · Helotes · Converse · Universal City

Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, and Bandera counties: Boerne · Bulverde · New Braunfels · Canyon Lake · Schertz · Cibolo · Bandera · Lake Medina

One local note: HOAs in Stone Oak, Timberwood Park, and the newer Bulverde and Fair Oaks Ranch subdivisions frequently review deck materials and colors before construction starts. Trex’s color range usually clears architectural review without trouble, but we confirm approval before ordering material — a special-order color on a rejected application is an expensive mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Trex deck cost in San Antonio?

Trex deck installation in San Antonio typically runs $35 to $60 per square foot installed, putting a 300-square-foot Trex deck at roughly $10,500 to $18,000. Entry-level Enhance sits near the bottom of that range and premium Signature above it. Deck height, stairs, railing style, and clay-soil footing work move the final number.

Do you offer free Trex deck estimates?

Yes. We come to your property at no cost, take measurements and grade readings, walk through the Trex lines and colors with you, and leave a fixed written quote. No charge for the visit, no obligation, and the price you approve is the price you pay.

Which Trex product lines do you install?

All five current collections: Signature, Transcend Lineage, Transcend, Select, and Enhance, plus matching Trex railing. We’re a listed Trex contractor and we also install TimberTech, AZEK, and PVC, so the recommendation you get is based on your deck’s exposure and budget rather than a single-brand agreement.

How does Trex decking handle intense summer sun and heat?

Trex holds its color against UV and won’t gray, warp, or splinter the way wood does. For heat specifically, Transcend Lineage uses SunComfortable heat-mitigating technology that Trex reports testing at up to 35 degrees cooler than its original boards in lab conditions, which is why we recommend it for west-facing decks and pool surrounds. Board color matters too — lighter colors run measurably cooler than dark ones in full sun.

What warranty comes with a Trex deck?

Trex limited residential warranties cover fading, staining, and material defects for 25 years on Enhance, 35 years on Select, and 50 years on Transcend, Transcend Lineage, and Signature. Those warranties assume the deck was installed to Trex’s published specifications for joist spacing, gapping, and fasteners — which is why installation quality matters to your coverage. Our own workmanship warranty covers the install separately.
