LED fixtures run cool — important in a climate where ambient temperatures already push 100°F in summer — consume a fraction of the energy of halogen or incandescent fixtures, and last years without bulb replacement. Fixtures should be rated IP65 or higher for outdoor use, meaning they’re fully sealed against dust and water jets. We only specify fixtures rated for outdoor exposure in South Texas conditions.

The transformer steps down household current to safe, low-voltage power that runs through landscape wire to each fixture. Benefits include safety (12V won’t cause electrocution if a wire is accidentally cut), low operating cost, dimmer and timer compatibility, and a wide selection of fixture styles. We size the transformer to total fixture wattage and plan wire runs so voltage drop doesn’t reduce brightness at fixtures farthest from the transformer.
One post cap light per railing post is standard. For decks with widely spaced posts — cable railing systems, for example — supplemental under-rail lighting fills the gaps. Yes. We retrofit deck lighting onto existing decks regularly — regardless of who built the deck originally. For surface-mounted fixtures, we route low voltage wire along joists and through pre-drilled holes with minimal disruption. We patch any penetrations cleanly and weatherproof all connections. Govee deck lights are a popular consumer smart lighting brand known for color-changing LED strips and app-based control. They work well as accent lighting — under-rail strips, between-board lighting, and pergola accents — and the Govee app gives solid scene and color control. We integrate Govee products into broader lighting plans where the color flexibility and smart control are a good fit, paired with traditional low-voltage fixtures for post caps and stair lighting where consistent output matters more than color-changing capability.
Low voltage deck lighting (12V transformer systems) generally does not require a permit in San Antonio. Line-voltage work — adding a new outdoor circuit, installing a subpanel for a large lighting system, or any 120V outdoor wiring — does require a licensed electrician and typically a permit. We handle the design and low-voltage installation in-house and coordinate licensed electrical work for line-voltage requirements when needed.
